(Idea for 2022 Top Picks?) Tam Jai International (HKEX: 2217) Part 1

A 2 part series, the 1st part will be more light hearted. It will be a review of my experience at Tam Jai Sam Kor in Singapore, 1 of the 3 restaurants it has in Singapore.

Singapore represents a 1% of its revenue as it generates 98% of its revenue in Hong Kong with 150 outlets in Hong Kong. The remaining 1% is from its 4 outlets in Mainland China

I have been to Hong Kong at least 6 times but i have not ate Tam Jai in Hong Kong once. To me, it looks like a store with many outlets like Fairwood Holdings.

Which means that unless i do not have a plan on what to eat or i am in a hurry for an event and this happens to be around while i am hungry...then i would eat this.

(Tam Jai Outlet at Chinatown Point)

Arrived at around 7 plus on a friday evening and there was a queue. As such i took a walk and went to shop for stuff around Chinatown before re-entering the queue around 8 plus where it was shorter (had around 4 ppl in front of me in queue)

Menu

One specialty Tam Jai has is its wide soup base and differing range of spicy level for customers to choose. As i have not been to such outlets before, i actually thought this looks like the mixian version of mala to me. As one can choose the ingredients to add on to as well as the extensive soup base.

Another food that has been lauded as their specialty would be its Tufei Chicken Mid-Wings.

Unfortunately i went alone and did not have enough food space to order the wings.

I ordered a cup of ice milk tea and their Guo Qiao Mixian (being a starter i did not know what to order ala-carte hence this looked like a try it all special)

Food Review

First up is the milk tea. As a person who has travelled Hong Kong frequently, i would say this milk tea is passable by Singapore standards but below average by Hong Kong standards. It did not have a good enough milk tea taste but its not the worst i have drank either.

Good Milk Tea would mean repeated orders...unfortunately based on the cup i drank, i did not feel like ordering another cup. Also i found the cup a bit underwhelming for $2.80.

A 5.5/10

Next is the Guo Qiao Mixian

I am surprised by the soup base as it is decent and has standards. The ingredients itself is fine but i am not sure if it is supposed to be this way but the Mixian seems to be on its own and the soup base is on its on. They did not seem to integrate together. Nevertheless, the bowl was filling and hearty.

A 7/10

Overall, the damage is $19.10. A good thing is when ordering, the price seen is the price paid as there is no add-on to the prices when ordering.

Ordering

Ordering is smooth and easy. Customers order via a QR-Code that brings you to the website and allow you to pay via credit card from there. If one wants to pay via nets or cash then they will have to make their way to the counter to order.

In the second part i will give my thoughts on my analysis of the company's financials and valuations.
